Island’s visitor industry sees near-recovery in arrivals
Maui welcomed around 2.9 million visitors last year, which represented a 95.1 percent recovery from pre-pandemic levels back in 2019, outpacing the state’s overall recovery rate, according to a report released earlier this week.
Maui hit a high of 3,059,905 visitors in 2019, the first time visitor arrivals surpassed the 3 million mark since record-keeping began around 30 years ago.
The state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism said on Monday that total visitor spending on Maui was $5.69 billion last year, up 11 percent from the $5.13 billion spent in 2019.
Statewide last year, about 9.2 million visitors came to Hawaii, representing an 89 percent recovery from 2019, when there were nearly 10.4 million visitors.
In 2022, total visitor spending was $19.29 billion, up 8.9 percent from $17.72 billion in 2019.
