September/October 2023

Aloha Wailea Ekahi Homeowners,

It’s been almost 2 months since the Lahaina fires, and as we slowly recover to face the realization and enormity of the challenges ahead, Maui is implementing the phased opening of West Maui beginning October 8th. Lahaina itself will remain fully closed to the public until further notice out of respect to the town’s residents.

I had the pleasure of attending the Lahainaluna versus Baldwin High School Football game Saturday night. War Memorial stadium sold out in a record breaking 17 minutes, and the entire community turned out in red to support the Luna’s trouncing Baldwin with a final score of 42-0.

As more of you travel back to Maui for extended stays, I’ve been receiving inquiries about volunteer work. Opportunities to volunteer are ever changing, and there are links below you can check once you arrive.

Last week, we received and set up a Firemagic EL500 that is being beta tested at Ekahi. This electric grill could provide us an alternative to propane when we eventually build out our community barbecue sites. We encourage you to visit the BBQ station located adjacent to building 47 so you can try it out and share your feedback. We expect the cooking times to be like our other grills and the flavor will be same as propane when the drippings hit the hot surface and vaporize to smoke. We developed a short survey so bring your phone to the site so you can capture the QR code. Our grilling hours are 3 PM – 8 PM.

At our September 20 Board of Directors meeting, we had a flurry of alteration activity related to AC installs and other renovation work. Some of these applications were submitted the week of the board meeting with owners expecting approval the same week. In order for our Building and Site Committee to have time for review, and for the Board to receive applications in advance of the meeting, we need complete applications with all supporting documentation further in advance. Our Board has implemented a policy to allow for this time.

Alteration Applications must be received, and verified as complete by the General Manager, by the 1st of the month in which you are seeking approval.

Some emails have been issued recently informing us that Maui Electric is still moving forward with the installation of advanced meters. If you do receive an email that your meter has been scheduled, you don’t need to notify the office. We have been working closely with HECO and MECO to get in front of this work and have completed the necessary improvements and upgrades to our house panels and submeter breakers. The MECO technician will knock on your door to alert any occupants about a brief power disruption of 1-3 minutes, and the work they are doing is outside your unit in the utility closet.

If you are returning to Maui soon and hoping to free up some space in your condo, please email Evelyn about storage. We have a few lockers available around the property and can get you signed up for 5 months with a March 1, 2024, annual renewal.

As our occupancy on Maui gains momentum, and we creep closer to the holidays, it is important that you remind your guests about mail services. We do not accept packages in our office and try to discourage guests from sending mail to the Owners mailboxes in our lobby.  If your guests insist on having packages delivered, UPS and FED Ex will deliver directly to the condo.
