Aloha Wailea Ekahi Homeowners,
We had a good turnout for our Board Meeting on July 10th, with most interest directed at the presentation from our legal counsel Jim Geiger. We’ve received many inquiries about our zoning class and how it could impact TVR use. Jim has provided the attached slide deck to illustrate how we could potentially apply for rezoning to H1, Hotel. His full presentation will be available in the minutes for July that will be circulated next month.
Maui Vacation Rental Association is strongly opposed to the proposed TRV ban, and we urge you to support their organization with membership. The next Maui Planning Commission meeting is July 23rd. If you haven’t delivered testimony yet, there is still the opportunity to do so, not later than 12 PM (HST) on July 22nd. Email testimony can be sent to planning@mauicounty.gov I attached the latest flyer from MVRA.
On our website, the current projects page has been updated with the condensed schedule for parking lot closures. As a reminder, all long-term vehicles must be removed from Ekahi by Friday August 16 and can’t be parked back at Ekahi until the project is completed on or around Friday September 20th. What little parking we do have available will be filled with an overflow of guests and service providers. We need to keep these lots free from owners’ cars, unless you are actively using your vehicle because you live here or are visiting. This is going to be a loud and dusty few weeks. Please get your housekeepers lined up in advance to ensure windows are closed. They may need to provide extra lanai services and exterior window cleaning.
In September, we will be conducting dryer vent cleaning with Vent Tech as our service provider for 2024. The services include unit entry to inspect the hose between your dryer and the wall for kinks or clogs. We will be providing an AOAO escort to test smoke detectors while the techs are inspecting your laundry system. We can’t pinpoint the exact time they will enter your unit. Vent Techs hours are 9 AM to 1:30 PM, each unit takes about 30 minutes, and there is a little noise generated outside with their compressor. Their schedule is attached, and it’s posted on the website under current projects.

I want to express my sincere gratitude for everyone’s cooperation with the on-going plumbing project. Thiago’s plumbing continues to work their way around Ekahi installing 2-way cleanouts and servicing the pipes under the slab. We have had a couple of surprises, which are expected when dealing with 50-year-old cast iron, but we have stayed on schedule. I’m pleased to inform you that we have already completed 20 buildings. With our in-house landscape and maintenance crew managing the excavation and backfilling, Ekahi’s assistance is extremely cost effective, and guests have been very gracious. As you receive this notification for intermittent water shut offs, please remind your guests that we have full bathroom, kitchen, and shower facilities available from 8AM -10PM at our Beach pavilion. We will suspend this project for the duration of the parking lot re-paving.
We received some information this week that may impact owners who have installed split system AC units recently. Daiken has a recall that was just announced, with potential for a fire threat if the outdoor condenser overheats. I’ve attached the information about the product recall and implore you to inspect your equipment to see if it falls within the recall.
Wailea Ekahi is the host property for the first open ocean Epic Swim. Over the next few weeks, 14 open water swimmers from around the world will circumnavigate the island of Maui. The event, entitled Epic Swim Maui, is the first event in the Global Expedition Swim Series, with the goal of promoting ocean health and scientific research and to honor Duke Kahanamoku, the only Olympic gold medalist in swimming from Hawaii who also helped popularize surfing worldwide. With our partner Coraltree as a sponsor, Ekahi is housing the 14 swimmers and their support crew. It’s been fun watching them come on and off our beach this week as they complete the South Maui coastal portion of the journey. Their final event includes a swim around Molokini and a party at our Pavilion Sunday July 28.
In August, there will be tent fumigation at Building 19 from August 5-7. If you live close by, this process can be alarming for guests unfamiliar with tenting, so we do recommend you mention it.
Finally, some bad news. Junior Sabas resigned from Ekahi, and his last day of work was Friday July 19th. I know we all thank him for his 20 years of service. We will miss Junior and wish him the best with his new opportunity.
