Building 51 and 54 Post and Pier – Update

I wanted to provide an update of the continued post and pier work at buildings 51 and 54. Most of you are aware from previous communication and phone calls, that we have had to extend the project into January due to unforeseen deterioration and dry rot on the decks themselves. Obviously, we couldn’t and wouldn’t attach rotten wood to brand new piers. With continued inspections and consultations from the Structural Engineer, and the General Contractor, there were more complexities to this pier replacement that anticipated. The inundation of rain and holidays period delays didn’t help with our original timeline.

I understand that this is peak season and occupancy is high. We are doing our best to service your guests with upfront and consistent communication, are managing the contractors noise levels and mess, and keeping in touch with impacted owners.

This week we were able to finish the work on 51B (with the exception of one outer row of tile) and moved the crew over the 54A. 54A, due to the height, was the most complicated rehab. Once 54A is finished next week, the crew will be working back at building 51, focusing on 51A. Then we will finish up at 51C and 54B. We expect this project to continue thru the end of January.

Rest assured Porter Construction, and their Foreman Aaron, are doing top notch work. They are getting custom brackets fabricated to better secure the lanai railings, have shipped over high-quality lumber from Oahu when the Maui supply didn’t meet their standards, they’re cutting custom piers since they aren’t all equal and more. We are in good hands with these guys, and I stand by the decision to award them this job, accept the change orders, and do this right.

Please know you have my sincere apologies for the delays and continued dissatisfaction from your guests that have been negatively impacted by our noise and nuisance.
